Fred Barton Obituary

​Mr. Fred Alon Barton​ was born on October 16, 1948 to the late Edd Laffon and Dorothy Hill Barton in Escambia County, AL. He was one of seventeen children. He was preceded in death by siblings, Gary, Tony, Eddie and Dorothy. Fred was a loving father, grandfather, uncle and brother. He was loved by many in the city of Brewton and surrounding areas.

Fred started his Christian walk early in life at the Second St. Siloam Baptist Church. Later he united Second St. John Baptist Church where he was ordained as a deacon. He was in regular attendance at New Life Holiness Apostolic Church and Greater Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Fred started his education at Piney Grove School on the campus of Southern Normal. He graduated in May 1967 from southern Normal High School. He attended Jefferson Davis Community College where he received his associate's degree. He later enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served faithful for eight years. Afterwards he enlisted in the United States Army National Guard and served for over 34 years with Tours of Duty in Vietnam and Iraq.

Fred worked for many years as a car salesman in Brewton, Century and Pensacola, FL. During this time he was awarded the Royal Purple Award (for selling the most cars) for the Atlantic District three consecutive years. He was also employed by the Escambia County Sherriff Department as a deputy and continued to serve until his death. Fred served as City Councilman for District 5 for the City of Brewton. He also served as a chaperone for over 34 years with the Brewton City School System.

Fred was married to the love of his life, Cheryl Preyer Barton for over 46 years. To this union were born two children, Ingria Barton (LaShawn) and Freda (Tony) Williams, both of Brewton, AL. Later they became parents to three children; Joshmene (Oralando) Green, Erica (Quan) Taylor, Chekara Barton, all of Brewton, AL. His great grandchildren were the apple of his eye; My'Angel Green-Barton, King Morris, Alon Green. He cherished his role as God father to Jeneri McKenzie.

Other survivors left to cherish his memory are his six siblings, three brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, three aunts, two uncles, close friends Willis (Connie) Fails, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends....too numerous to mention by name.
