Obituary

Sumpter Lee Lett was born to Leonard Lett Sr. and Azalean (Reaves) Lett on December 30, 1937 in Monroeville, AL.  Sumpter graduated in 1958 from Monroe County Training School (now known as JF Shields High School) in Beatrice, AL.  Where he excelled in their athletics program playing football and basketball.

 

In 1960 he met and married Margaret Virginia Parker-Simmons.  To that blessed union five children were born.  Sheila A. Olive, Sumpter L. Lett Jr. (stillborn), Deborah A. Lett, Tanya A. D. Lett and Michele Y. Lett.  The couple also later expanded their family by adopting Latifa Y. Lett.

Sumpter grew in the grace and knowledge of God at Antioch Baptist Church in Tunnel Springs, AL.  He accepted Christ through his sisters Mary Hawthorne and Mildred Knight and lived a life of the fruit of kindness.

Sumpter was a hard-working provider and held several positions at the following companies: NYC Construction; Crown; Cork & Seal with his longest employment being with The Ford Motor Company for 35 years.  Sumpter took pride in his work and the time he spent with his friends at work.

Sumpter was known for his kind nature and gentle southern drawl.  He also served in many community capacities most notably as the President of the Conklin Avenue Block Association for several years.  He also helped to organize fun filled block parties, family bus trips and was even key in supporting many positive political campaigns that created change and positive growth for the community of Hillside, NJ.

 Sumpter is predeceased by his mother, father, three brothers, three sisters and his son:  Willie D. Lett, James Lett, Leonard Lett Jr., Venator Watson, Gladys Snowden, Mary Francis Hawthorne and Sumpter L. Lett Jr.

Sumpter leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Margaret V. Lett of Hillside, NJ; his brother, John S. Lett of Louisville, KY; his sister Mildred Knight of Camden, AL; his five children; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors and most of all his trusted companion Eli Lett.
