Virginia Hamilton Obituary

Virginia Lee Dortch Hamilton was born on April 19, 1930, in Wilcox County, Alabama to the late Mr. Clarence Dortch, Sr. and the late Mrs. Alice James Dortch. She was the first of eleven children born to this union.

Virginia committed her life to Christ at an early age and joined Wayman Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Hybart, Alabama. She later joined Grant African Methodist Church in Los Angeles, California serving in various positions in the church including an effective Class Leader. After relocating back to Alabama, she joined Bethel #2 Baptist Church in Monroeville, Alabama where she remained a member until her death.

Virginia obtained her primary education from Wayman Chapel School in Hybart, Alabama. She attended boarding school at Camden Academy in Camden Alabama where she received her high school diploma in May 1950. Upon graduation, she attended Knoxville College in Knoxville, Tennessee for one year; then transferred to Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama graduating with a Bachelor of Science in May 1954.

She was united in Holy Matrimony on July 3, 1971 to the late Mr. George Hamilton in Los Angeles, California. No children were born to this union.

Virginia joined California Hospital and Medical Center in Los Angeles, California as a supervisor and later was promoted to department head in the Department of Radiation Oncology. She retired from this position in August 1989 after over 30 years of employment with the hospital. During the summer of 1993, she relocated back to Alabama where she purchased a house in Monroeville.

Virginia had a quiet and warm spirit. She enjoyed reading the Bible and Devotional books. Gardening was her hobby and roses were her passion. Her California lawn was packed with a variety of breathtaking roses with blooms in an array of beautiful colors. When she relocated to Monroeville, Alabama, she continued her gardening until she became too ill to do so. She also enjoyed quilting, crossword puzzles and taking early morning walks in the neighborhood with neighbors.

She departed this life on her birthday, Sunday, April 19, 2026. She was preceded in death by herhusband, her parents and one brother, Mr. Clarence Dortch, Jr. (Peggy).* Left to cherish her memory are her loving and devoted brothers and sisters: Mr. Ralph J. Dortch (Stella), Mrs. Lenna Dortch Hollinger (Booker),* Mr. Heyward Dortch (Amelia), Mrs. Retha Dortch Thompson (Frank, Sr.),* Mr. John P. Dortch (Anita), Mrs. Rebecca Dortch Brown (John), Mrs. Dolores Dortch Watkins (Frederick), Mrs. Ruth Dortch Davis, and Ms. Esther Delilah Dortch together with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
